So now that we have covered the Egyptians and the Chinese we are moving onto the Celts. It is extremely cool how salt was able to preserve the bodies and materials that were discovered in the side of the mountain. It stinks that the Celts did not leave any type of records behind, now we have to find out about them from different civilizations. Stories are never the same when told by outsiders.
Up until this chapter I thought that the Egyptians were the only ones to bury possessions with them, but I guess I was wrong. When some 1,000 Celt bodies were discovered we found out that they also buried some of there possessions with them. I praise the Celts for becoming the first society to come up with salt-cured ham. I love ham!!! I am glad though that we did not carry on the tradition of giving the best ham to the greatest warrior. Its cool how the Celts way has carried into the Scottish venison.
It is kind of sad that the Celts were able to do so many great things with salt, yet they were never able to fuse into a nation. When it comes down to it without the Celts the Romans would not have become such a strong nation. This book just keeps getting more and more interesting!

It is sad that the Celts never grew stronger! They did such great things and then they disappeared. At least they helped the Roman Empire grow...
I agree that the book is getting more interesting, I thought that a whole book on salt would be pretty boring, but I'm beginning to like it!
I also praise the Celts for the invention of ham. Fail nation-builder is fail. We pretty much have the same views on this chapter. good show.
Now that were learned about the celts what else could they have helped the Romans with? The book said the celts were the innovators...Rome just have a unified nation...
It does suck that the Celts were never able to build an empire. They did so many great things, in which most of the things they did helped the Romans. It is like a slap in the face for the Celts. Also I agree with the whole ham thing, ham is amazing, thank the Celts.
The Romans could have at least been grateful towards the Celts for their inventions, but no they had to be all high and mighty. They claimed the Celts ideas, gave them no credit, and called them barbarians.
YOU WROTE: "It stinks that the Celts did not leave any type of records behind, now we have to find out about them from different civilizations. Stories are never the same when told by outsiders."
Great comment. True that when nothing is written down everybody loses out. The Celts were a mysterious tribe described only to us by their enemies (the Romans)
I think ancient/primative people burried the dead with their possessions because they had trouble understanding "the next world". You can't take it with you, my Gram used to tell us.
Yeah, the Celts sure do dig on swine. Pork this, and pork that. Curing meats definately allowed for people to have "transportable" food stuffs.
Glad you are learning, and enjoying.
